At that temperature, zinc flows like water — it fills every contour of the mold cavity, reproducing surface textures down to the microscopic level. Finish and Plating: The Look That Lasts

Antique finishes go through an extra step. After the color plating, we apply a darkening solution that settles into the recessed areas. Then a vegetable-fiber buffing wheel polishes the raised surfaces only. The result: dark shadows in the low areas, bright metal on the high points, and a sense of depth that a flat shiny surface can’t match. That’s large enough to feel substantial when it’s placed around someone’s neck. Small enough to wear comfortably through the post-race food line. And light enough that shipping 500 of them doesn’t destroy your freight budget.
Youth and kids’ 5K medals should be smaller: 40-50mm, 2-2.5mm thick, 30-45 grams. Kids notice weight more than adults and a medal that’s too heavy gets taken off. A lighter medal on a shorter ribbon (800mm instead of the standard 900mm for adults) fits better and gets worn longer.

Budget Tiers: What You Get at Each Level
Budget isn’t about how much you spend per medal. It’s about where you spend it. Here’s what different budget levels actually deliver, based on a 500-piece order.
Entry level: Iron stamped, simple round or shield shape, single-sided design, 1-2 enamel colors, shiny gold or nickel plating, stock ribbon. This is the “we need medals and we need them affordable” tier. The medal looks exactly like what it costs — simple, functional, not embarrassing. Perfectly fine for a first-year community 5K or a school event. If your participants are kids under 12, they won’t notice the difference between iron and zinc.


Mid-range: Zinc die-cast, custom or standard shape, 2-4 enamel colors, choice of shiny or antique finish, single-sided design with laser-engraved back, stock or basic custom ribbon. This is where most organized 5Ks land. The zinc die-casting gives you design detail that iron can’t touch. 3-4 colors make the design pop without driving labor costs too high. An antique finish adds perceived value for a small per-unit premium.
Premium feel: Zinc die-cast, custom shape with cutouts, 3D relief, 4-6 enamel colors, antique or dual-tone finish, double-sided design, custom sublimated ribbon. This is the tier where the medal becomes a collector’s item. Double-sided design effectively doubles the color-filling labor but transforms the medal from a one-sided sign into a fully realized object. The single biggest cost lever at every tier: number of enamel colors. Each color is applied by hand, one at a time, with a curing step between.
