The metal you choose determines everything downstream — the level of detail possible, the weight in a runner’s hand, how the finish wears over time. There are two practical options for 5K finisher medals.

Zinc alloy is the industry standard for good reason. We melt it at 385°C and inject it into a steel mold under 88 tons of pressure. At that temperature, zinc flows like water — it fills every contour of the mold cavity, reproducing surface textures down to the microscopic level. Finish and Plating: The Look That Lasts

The plating is what people see first. It’s an electrolytic process — we run parts through a sequence of tanks: degreasing to remove polishing compound, ultrasonic cleaning, then a base layer of alkaline copper (about 500 seconds for even coverage), followed by acid copper for brightness (20-60 minutes depending on the luster you want), and finally the color layer. Antique finishes go through an extra step. After the color plating, we apply a darkening solution that settles into the recessed areas. Then a vegetable-fiber buffing wheel polishes the raised surfaces only. Standard 5K finisher medals are 50-65mm in diameter (or equivalent area for custom shapes), 2.5-3.5mm thick, and weigh 45-70 grams in zinc alloy. That’s large enough to feel substantial when it’s placed around someone’s neck. Small enough to wear comfortably through the post-race food line. And light enough that shipping 500 of them doesn’t destroy your freight budget.

Youth and kids’ 5K medals should be smaller: 40-50mm, 2-2.5mm thick, 30-45 grams. Kids notice weight more than adults and a medal that’s too heavy gets taken off. A lighter medal on a shorter ribbon (800mm instead of the standard 900mm for adults) fits better and gets worn longer.

Entry level: Iron stamped, simple round or shield shape, single-sided design, 1-2 enamel colors, shiny gold or nickel plating, stock ribbon. This is the “we need medals and we need them affordable” tier. The medal looks exactly like what it costs — simple, functional, not embarrassing. Perfectly fine for a first-year community 5K or a school event. If your participants are kids under 12, they won’t notice the difference between iron and zinc.

A finisher medal goes to every participant who completes the race. Same design, same quality, one per person. An age-group award goes to the top finishers in each age category — typically 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Most events that give finisher medals also give separate age-group awards. A common approach: use the same mold for both, with finisher medals in one finish and age-group medals in gold/silver/copper variants from the same mold.

For an in-person 5K with on-site registration, order 10-15% over your expected total. For a race with only pre-registration, 5% over is usually enough to cover lost or damaged medals and last-minute additions. Our MOQ is 100 pieces. Yes. Nickel is the most durable of the common plating metals — it’s hard, tarnish-resistant, and doesn’t oxidize. Gold plating is actually a gold-colored alloy over the copper base; it’s durable but can show wear at high points over years of handling. Antique finishes hide wear better than shiny finishes because the darkened recesses naturally mask small scratches and scuffs. For medals that will be displayed and handled (not stored in a box), antique nickel or antique gold is the most forgiving.
